Psychology for many decades was synonymous with addressing the problems of people -- mental illness, maladaptive behavior, and negative thinking. More recently there has emerged a positive psychology movement that examines human thoughts, behavior, and feelings with a lens that focuses on strengths rather than weaknesses. Researchers focus upon positive experiences, states, traits, and institutions. A common way to understand positive psychology and well-being is through the acronym “PERMA” which stands for positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishments.
